Biography

Dr. Sullivan is an Associate Professor of Medicine in the Division of Pulmonary, Allergy, and Critical Care Medicine; Department of Psychology; and Division of Oncological Sciences of the Knight Cancer Institute at Oregon Health & Science University. He is also an Affiliate Physician-Scientist at the Portland Veterans Affairs (VA) Healthcare System, Center of Innovation. He is a health services researcher and has authored over 90 peer-reviewed publications. He received a Cambia Health Foundation Sojourns Scholar Leadership Award in 2020 and the Mid-Career Achievement Award from the Behavioral Science and Health Services Assembly of the American Thoracic Society in 2025. Dr. Sullivan has held several leadership positions within the American Thoracic Society and is the co-chair of the American Thoracic Society’s Palliative Care Special Interest Group. His primary research focuses on improving the quality of life and value of care among persons with or at risk for serious respiratory illness using mixed-methods, decision-making, and behavioral intervention research. He is or has been funded by the National Institutes of Health- National Cancer Institute and National Institute on Aging; American Cancer Society, American Thoracic Society, American Lung Association, Borchard Foundation, Cambia Health Foundation, Knight Cancer Institute, Medical Research Foundation, Veterans Affairs Center for Innovation, and UPENN Roybal Center.
