Defining Our Commitment

Representation

We are dedicated to building teams that reflect a wide range of experiences, perspectives, and identities—including those shaped by differences in culture, background, socioeconomic status, belief systems, and more. These differences are strengths that drive innovation, collaboration, and excellence.

Fairness

We believe in fair, transparent practices that support individuals and teams while recognizing that different people face different challenges. Fairness means adapting our support to meet real needs and removing barriers that may hinder success.

Environment of Belonging

We strive to foster environments where every individual feels respected, valued, and empowered. We promote psychological safety, mutual respect, and a culture that recognizes each person’s contributions and potential.

Council goals

  • Provide focused training and education to promote a culture of professionalism, respect, and accountability across the department.
  • Strengthen recruitment, retention, and leadership development processes to ensure transparency and consistency for all faculty and staff.
  • Establish a clear process for addressing concerns raised by patients, learners, or team members about unprofessional or inappropriate behavior.
  • Partner with community organizations and align our efforts with broader School of Medicine initiatives to expand access and outreach.

Our Progress

  • Training and Education: Initiated quarterly department-wide Grand Rounds and residency didactic sessions to promote a collaborative and inclusive learning culture.
  • Recruitment and Evaluation: Ensured council representation on department leadership search committees and annual Promotion & Tenure Committee reviews to support fair evaluation processes.
  • Support and Resources: Secured funding for educational and outreach initiatives, including support for residents from historically inadequately represented backgrounds in academic medicine to attend national professional conferences.
